Skin Cancer

Cancer of the skin is the fastest growing malignancy in the United States. Risk factors include ultraviolet damage to the skin from the sun and a family history of skin cancers. Most skin cancers are identified and managed by primary care physicians and dermatologists. However, since a large number of skin cancers involve the head and neck area, Dr. Sinha may be involved in the surgical removal of the skin cancer or in reconstructing a cosmetic defect caused by the skin cancer.

Prevention and close follow-up are key in the management of skin cancers. Avoidance of the sun during the hours of 10am and 2pm and a sun-block which blocks BOTH types of ultraviolet rays from the sun are necessary. Interestingly, many over the counter sun blocks DO NOT offer full protection against damaging rays of the skin (we have prescription sun blocks in the office that offer improved protection).

A mole or other skin lesion can be considered to be suspicious if it is Asymmetrical or irregular, if the Border is raised or jagged, if there is Color variation or if the Diameter of the lesion is >6mm (1/4 of a inch). A simple office biopsy can be performed to help diganose benign from malignant disease.

If a skin lesion in the head or neck area appears suspicious, please call us at 404-257-1589 for a consultation.
