The surgery, called functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), may be done either under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. The operation generally takes approximately 2-3 hours. During that period of time, Dr. Sinha will do any one of a number of things including: straightening the septum (the bone and cartilage separating the two sides of your nose), removing tissue from inside the nose, making an opening into the sinus(es) on either side of the nose so that drainage can occur more effectively, and possibly remove some of the lining of the sinuses for biopsy if indicated.. The number of sinuses which need to be opened up depends on the nature of your problem. Dr. Sinha uses a rigid tube (endoscope) which is inserted into the nose. The entire operation is done through the nose. FESS involves opening up the naturally occurring openings (ostia) from the sinuses into the nose. |

Generally, patients will remain in the hospital just for the day of the operation. Patients are usually out of work for 3-7 days. Full recovery will take six weeks, although for periods of six months to a year patients may become more sensitive to infection. Dr. Sinha will typically remove crusting on a regular basis (2-3 times) from the nose to prevent scarring from occurring during the 6 week recovery period. There are limitations on lifting, blowing the nose, and flying for two weeks to prevent nose bleeds. Saline irrigations and post operative medical therapy is extremely important in helping the healing process.
The vast majority of patients experience a great improvement in there sinus symptoms after healing from surgery. However, it is important to remain vigilant about treating underlying sinus disease such as allergy that may have caused the original disease to develop and to maintain appropriate follow-up so any sinus problems can be addressed before they become serious.
Sinus surgery can be a valuable tool in helping treat chronic disease. You may schedule a consultation with Dr. Sinha at 404/257-1589 for a complete consulation and evaluation.
