Head and Neck Cancer is a severly debilitating form of malignancy that is seen primarily in people with a history of tobacco and alcohol use. However, some neck tumors, particularly, lymphomas, can be seen in people who have never smoked or consumed alcohol.

Signs and symptoms of head and neck cancer may include:

  1. Neck Mass
  2. Unexplained weight loss
  3. Trouble swallowing
  4. Pain swallowing
  5. Ear pain
  6. Coughing of blood or bleeding from the nose
  7. Sensation of mass in throat that can't be cleared
  8. Fevers or night sweats

Evaluation of Head and Neck Cancer

A detailed history and physical examination is the beginning of the diagnostic process. Blood test, chest x-ray and CT scan may also be ordered. A detailed evaluation of the upper airways with biopsy to rule localize the tumor or to look for other cancers. Sometimes a needle biospy of a neck mass may also be done.

Treatment for Head and Neck Cancer

Depending on the tumor and extent of disease, surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy may be recommended. Treatment is individualized to the patient. Clinical trials that compare different treatment protocols may offer new alternatives to patients.
